How Canadian Aerospace Scientists helped save Apollo 13 Astronauts from certain death.

Doctor Rod Tennyson, Professor Emeritus, was part of a team from the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies that helped the Apollo 13 spacecraft astronauts land safely back on Earth on April 17, 1970.

Rod will walk us through the gripping survival story of three courageous astronauts who were attempting a third lunar landing.  Unfortunately, the Apollo mission had to be aborted due to a severe malfunction of both the electrical and life-support systems of the spacecraft.  Instead of landing on the Moon, the astronauts looped around it and Rod and his fellow team members were able to help these courageous men return safely to Earth - their faith in God also inspired them to survive.

Despite unfortunate setbacks, the Apollo 13 expedition has since been regarded "as a successful failure" because valuable technical experience was gained in rescuing the crew.

If you are interested in brave human beings and how faith plays in to the wish to survive, please join us to enjoy some fellowship, cookies and coffee; please contact Dorothy Walker at 905 262 6605 or email walkerdorothy2021@gmail.com. This way, we will have a better idea of seating and refreshment requirements.

THE NEWARK SINGERS

The Newark Singers is based at St. Mark's Anglican Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Chamber Choir was created by Michael Tansley in 2015 and consists of 12-16 singers, though the Choir is augmented from time to time depending on the works to be performed. Our repertoire embraces Madrigals, Folk Songs, Part Songs, and the more challenging Sacred Music repertoire, often involving Double Choir.

Most of our singers are involved in other Community and Church Choirs, but enjoy the challenge of being part of a smaller group where each singer is an integral part of the Choir.  We plan on two Concerts per year - Spring and Christmas. Our most recent programme was "A Covid Christmas" featuring Carols and Readings (2021) The singers were both masked and distanced !

The Newark Singers are also available for specific events, and our repertoire is always evolving.

In 1998, Atis Bankas came to Niagara-on-the-Lake with the dream of founding a music school and summer music festival. He had discovered the perfect location ? one of Canada's most beautiful towns on the shores of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the magnificent Niagara River, an area of great historical significance, surrounded by orchards and lush vineyards.

Over the years, Music Niagara has evolved into a world-class summer music festival that runs five weeks, featuring Canadian and international musicians performing a variety of music genres.

Festival

The festival has established itself as an annual cultural event, with a core audience and a capacity for networking with other arts, heritage and cultural organizations within the Niagara Region. Each summer, internationally acclaimed artists come to Niagara to play a variety of recitals and St. Mark's plays host to some of the most gifted performers.

The artistic director of the Festival, Atis Bankas, (first violinist, Toronto Symphony and resident of Niagara?on-the-Lake), is a frequent recitalist during the festival in July/August and a guest instrumentalist at St. Mark's throughout the year. In addition to the chamber music festival the church plays host to a number of concerts, both classical and contemporary, throughout the year. The building's superior acoustics and fine instruments makes St. Mark's a favorite setting for musical performers and audience members alike.
